A new DNA study has revealed that the Minoans on the island of Crete were indigenous Europeans, a fact that reopens the debate on the origin of this culture. The study says that the origin of this ancient civilization was local, it did not come from elsewhere, while other studies determine that it came from Africa or the Middle East.

British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans was the first to conceptualize the Minoans after discovering the Bronze Age palace of Knossos (Crete) and which revealed that the cities were built after the death of King Minos, who according to legend, ordered a labyrinth to be built on the island to safeguard it from a minotaur ( half man, half bull).

Evans argued that the Minoans were Egyptians who fled the Nile Delta of the conquest of a southern king 5,000 years ago claiming the similarities between Minoan and Egyptian art. Meanwhile, other specialists bet on Palestinian and Syrian origin.

In this new study, Professor Stamatoyannopoulos analyzed the dental DNA of 37 Minoans buried on the Lassithi Plateau dating from the mid-Minoan period (3,700 years old). The results have been compared with similar data from 135 populations both ancient and modern, genetically ruling out the Minoan origin in Egypt, Libya and Arabia.

The DNA of the ancient Minoans it is more similar to European populations, highlighting a greater genetic affinity with the population of Sardinia and Iberia in the Bronze Age, and with Scandinavia and France in the Paleolithic era. They also show resemblance to the current inhabitants of Lassithi, a highly curious fact for geneticists.

Concluding the study, the Minoans developed locally and probably came to the island in the Neolithic period 9,000 years ago. “The Minoans were European Cretans although they have artistic influence from other peoples, seeing the Mediterranean together, never in isolation. Thus, we have shown that thanks to DNA, archaeologists can be effectively helped to put things in their place”Exclaims Professor Stamatoyannopoulos.

Almost graduated in Marketing from the Rey Juan Carlos University, a degree chosen by vocation as a good passionate about communication and a great addict to continuously analyze each commercial that is presented to me. Very perfectionist ... very creative ... and very, very restless. I live from the imagination, so I can bring different ideas and points of view. I love drawing and anything that deals with design, frustrated artist. Curious about everything ancient and a lover of Egyptology for as long as I can remember; Egypt marked on my skin. Although I am not a historian, Red Historia gives me the opportunity to share this passion and to make you feel the same concern that I feel.
